Please join the Longfellow Area Neighborhood third Not-Quite-Annual Yard Sale
Brought to you by the Longfellow Area Neighborhood Association

WHEN: Saturday, September 26, 2009, 9 am - 3 pm, rain or shine
WHO: Anyone living in the Longfellow Area Neighborhood can participate as a seller. Anyone from anywhere can be a buyer.

HOW:

Sellers: Register for the yard sale by sending in the coupon below with $10 for your LANA membership dues (those who are current with their dues do not need to send $10). LANA will advertise the event in local newspapers.

Buyers: On the day of the sale directional signs will be posted throughout the neighborhood, and maps of all participating households will be available at each participating household.

We are working on finding an organization to pick up your unsold items one day during the week after the sale.

Boston City Council's Special Committee on a Livable Boston (chaired by City Councillor John R Connolly) will be holding the first of a series of public hearings on Monday, June 22 at 6pm in the 1st floor conference room of Curtis Hall, 20 South Street, Jamaica Plain.

The purpose of this committee is to examine the recession's impact on individuals living in the city of Boston, and to develop strategies to attract and retain individuals and families from all walks of life who will make Boston home for a lifetime.

This meeting will focus on the neighborhoods of Roslindale, JP, and Mission Hill, but is open to all. Residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas about life in their neighborhoods.

June 6: National Trails Day at Franklin Park

National Trails Day - Saturday, June 6th 10:00am-Noon
If you were disappointed that nearly every volunteer activity this spring was rained out, join us on Saturday to restore trails, remove invasive species, rake leaves, and spruce up the park. Tools and gloves provided. Weather report: low 70s and NO RAIN - perfect! All ages and abilities are welcome. Meet at Valley Gates Parking Lot midway along the park road.

Discover Roxbury Bicycle Tour - Saturday, June 27th 11:00am-1:00pm - Ride includes Malcolm X's home, the Museum of Afro-American Artists, many famous Franklin Park sites, and the Forest Hills cemetery, created as a public burial ground by the Mayor of Roxbury in 1848. There'll be a rest at the Franklin Park Golf Clubhouse where you can purchase lunch. Helmets and an RSVP (info@discoverroxbury.org) are required. Tour leaves from Roxbury Heritage State Park, 183 Roxbury Street in Eliot Square and ends at Roxbury Crossing / Soutwest Corridor Park.

Despite challenging financial times, the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park will be back this summer! Mark your calendars - every Tuesday evening (and morning) for six weeks from July 14-- to August 18th. Jazz, R & B, gospel, and a movie on the big screen - great entertainment for everyone. FREE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR PAINT AVAILABLE. Residents may bring containers of reusable paint, stains, varnishes, polyeurethane, and paint thinner to a Drop-Off. Residents may take away as much paint as they want--for FREE!

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR OWN OIL. Bring used vehicle oil from your car, boat, or other vehicle to a Drop-Off. Do not mix the oil with any other substance. Antifreeze and steering wheel fluid will not be accepted.

REGULATIONS
-proof of Boston residency required
-20 containers maximum
-paints must be in original containers with legible labels
-items must not be mixed
-evaporated or empty cans and aerosol paint cans will NOT be accepted
-commercial waste will NOT be accepted

May 11-15: Bay State Bike Week

May is National Bike Month and here in Massachusetts we're doing our part to celebrate with Bay State Bike Week, May 11-17. It's your chance to join thousands of other bikers across the country by doing something for the environment and having a great time while you're at it. It's a win/win proposition.

RozzieBikes (http://www.rozziebikes.org) will be riding into town every morning of Bike week.

Bay State Bike Week is free, so sign up today! Events will be taking place all across Massachusetts. We'll even send 200 registrants a $5 gift certificate to either International Bicycle Centers, Ski Market, Landry's Bicycles or Wheelworks.

The 2009 West Roxbury Reads series, sponsored by the Friends of the West Roxbury Branch Library, focuses on a nonfiction title, In Defense of Food, by investigative journalist Michael Pollan. Pollan, author also of the best-selling The Omnivore's Dilemma, will speak at the library on the evening of Tuesday, May 12.

The West Roxbury reads series, drawing on themes in Pollan's work, will begin on April 2, and run for six weeks until mid-May. See the Friends website www.FriendsWRLibrary.org for a full listing of events in the series, film revues and changes and additions to the calendar. The full calendar will also be available on bookmark calendars available at the library, and at the Paper Store/Hallmark in the Roche Center and Allandale Farm, which will be selling In Defense of Food.
